Today, many are expressing shock at the news that a 69 year old Philadelphia abortion doctor, Dr. Kermit Gosnell, has been arrested for murdering at least seven babies outside of the womb as the result of an abortion complication known as “live birth.” His clinic, labelled “a house of horrors” by the district attorney, was found littered with “bags and bottles holding aborted foetuses...there were jars, lining shelves, with severed feet that he kept for no medical purpose.”

The means employed by Gosnell to murder these babies are no less shocking. According to the District Attorney Seth Williams, Gosnell would deliver the babies live, and then butcher them by thrusting a pair of scissors into the backs of their necks and severing their spinal cords. After butchering one 32-week baby boy, he joked “This baby is big enough to walk around with me or walk me to the bus stop.” Although he is being charged with the death of seven of these children (as are a number of his staff), CBS stated that he is suspected of slaughtering hundreds more in a similar fashion.

People are rightfully expressing outrage over this tragic case, but both prolifers and abortion advocates risk losing sight of a very important fact: the only reason that these events appear more tragic than most is that they were done outside the womb. The sole difference between the gruesome murder of these young children, and the killing of millions more exactly the same age, is location. Indeed, the only reason that Gosnell is being prosecuted is because he used a scissors on children’s heads outside of the womb, as opposed to crushing their skulls and vacuuming their brains out inside the womb. While the actions perpetrated on innocent children by Kermit Gosnell are a travesty to the human race, it must be remembered that there are millions of children being killed in a similar fashion who will never see justice, due to the simple fact that the location of their demise was slightly different.

The question must be asked: what is the difference between the children butchered by Gosnell, and perfectly legal abortions that happen every day? In Canada, abortion is legal throughout all nine months of pregnancy. Can anyone honestly say that the children in their seventh, eighth, and ninth months of pregnancy murdered by Gosnell and those who are aborted either in the womb or partially in the womb are any different? It is simply impossible to say that the murders perpetrated by Dr. Gosnell and abortions that occur throughout all nine months of pregnancy in North America are any different, with the sole exception of their size and location. Both biology and philosophy defy the stance of abortion advocates, and as long as they continue to claim that the point at which a child’s life gains value is subjective and arbitrary, cases such as that of Dr. Gosnell, which are sadly consistent with the worldview of the abortion advocates, will continue to happen.
